The Microbial Biotechnology Research Group’s main research themes can be summarised as follows:

the epidemiology of specific organisms using developmental genomics and proteomics techniques

investigating the emerging protozoan pathogen Cryptosporidium parvum

sequencing the genome of the aerobic, obligately thermophilic Gram positive bacterium Geobacillus thermoleovorans

the study of opportunistic pathogens Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia cepacia and their involvement in biofilm formation in people with Cystic Fibrosis

investigating thermophiles, bacteria capable of growth at high temperatures in excess of 70oC

biosynthesis and biotransformation of organophosphonate compounds with biocidal activity

Summary of main research interests:

Bacteriophage therapy

Biodegradation and biotransformation of environmentally and medically important compounds

Biosurfactant production

Ethanol production

Extremophiles

Molecular epidemiology and diagnosis of human gastro-intestinal pathogens

Molecular microbial ecology

Probiotics

Solid state fermentation of agri-residues
