He stayed at the University of Ulster to complete Masters of Research and PhD degrees in 1996 and 1999, respectively, majoring in analytical chemistry. In 1990, he took obtained a post-doctoral research position in bio-analytical chemistry studying amphibian skin secretions and reptile venoms using modern analytical techniques in particular mass spectrometry. Stephen was appointed to his current position of Lecturer in Proteomics at the University of Ulster in December 2001. Dr McClean is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Main Research Interests:The isolation and characterisation of bioactive peptides and small molecules from amphibian skin secretions and reptile and arachnid venoms. This is done by QTOF MS/MS de novo sequencing of peptides, Edman degradation sequencing, FMOC solid phase peptide synthesis and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The quantitation of licit and illicit drug compounds in human hair samples by chromatographic and mass spectrometric methods is also of interest.
